Hidden gem of the Black Hills

Tanager Brook Inn was established in 2020. This historic mid 20th century property brought together three generations of the Wheaton family. We spent 2 years updating the original house and renovating out first unit: the Creekview suit.

Tanager Brook Inn is located on the Old Hill City road, between Keystone, SD and Hill City, SD. The famous 1880 train goes right by our backyard and the Battle Creek babbles through it. Two acres of grounds feature oak and pine trees, the creek hosts brook trout (yes, you are welcome to fly fish) and is home for a lot of wild life. Deer and turkeys are frequent visitors, along with blue jays, woodpeckers, owls and, of course, American tanagers.

Our family stayed at Tanager Brook in the summer/fall. Everything was so nice! The rental was spacious and fun. The grounds are well kept, quiet and relaxing. Only a few minutes to all the attractions, but still out in the country. The best part is the brook right of the back yard. It is peaceful and relaxing.

Natalie provides roomy, comfortable accommodations in a central location which is so peaceful and relaxing. The electric fireplace and outdoor grill are excellent additions. The decorating is beautiful and rustic, just like the photos. Grab this one. It’s definitely one of our favorite Airbnb’s.

My husband and I needed a quiet retreat and an escape from South Texas heat. This place was perfect. Great location for ALL the fun things in the Black Hills. Natalie keeps this place insanely clean, has thought of every kitchen utensil you can think of, and provides coffee pods for the coffee maker (although Grapes and Grinds just down the road in Keystone is amazing!). The beds are super comfortable and the Wi-Fi is great, which is nice as there is no cell service! Softest towels in the entire world, water pressure in the shower is excellent. Happily recommend and would stay here again!

Our property is located only short drive away from many Black Hills attractions: Mt. Rushmore, Custer State Park, Sylvan Lake, Crazy Horse, Reptile Gardens, Bear Country, etc. Vacation with us for 2-3 nights, a week or even longer – you will hardly run out of places to visit and things to do.
